In a news release announcing the indictments, the Department of Justice announced it had indicted Dr. John Kirkpatrick and Roland Williams, both of whom live in Michigan. According to the indictment, from May 2018-March 2021, Dr. Kirkpatrick worked with Williams to prescribe drugs to people who didn’t need them from a medical clinic in Southfield, Michigan.

The pair is accused of recruiting “patients” with no legitimate reason to need opioids, and then giving them prescriptions, WDIV reported. Kirkpatrick only accepted cash and prescribed both oxycodone and oxymorphone.

The pair are also accused of creating fake medical records for their “patients” so that the prescriptions Dr. Kirkland wrote would appear legitimate, WJBK reported. Those records included fake MRI and Michigan Automated Prescription System reports, the station reported.

Prosecutors say Dr. Kirkpatrick prescribed more than 574,604 doses of the opioids, which had a street value of more than $17 million.
