Emmanuel Antwi, a senior offensive and defensive lineman at Kennedy High School in Sacramento, collapsed during a game against Hiram Johnson High School, KOVR reported. Kennedy had suffered “a medical emergency,” according to the Sacramento City Unified School District.

It is unclear what caused Antwi’s collapse, KCRA reported.

The game was halted, KOVR reported.

In a letter to families, Kennedy High School Principal David Van Natten said school counselors and mental health support staff will provide “a virtual drop-in grieving space” through Zoom beginning Monday.

Counselors will also be available in person at the school once football practice resumes, Van Natten wrote.

“Our hearts go out to Emmanuel’s family and our school community during this difficult time,” Sacramento City Unified Superintendent Jorge A. Aguilar said in a statement. “We ask all to give them privacy and time for healing and comfort as they grieve.”
