NEW YORK — A 17-year-old boy was arrested Saturday morning in connection with the Friday afternoon shooting near Bronx Preparatory Charter School in the South Bronx, New York, that killed a 16-year-old girl and injured two others.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell told WPIX that witness accounts and a video trail led detectives to Jeremiah Ryan, who has been charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Sixteen-year-old Angellyh Yambo was fatally shot moments after she exited the charter school just after 1:45 p.m., WABC-TV reported.
New York Police Department Chief of Police Christopher McCormack confirmed that Ryan had no prior criminal record, WPIX reported.
“Worst phone call anybody could get. I just hope this violence stops; it’s hurting a lot of us,” Yambo’s aunt told the TV station.
“We’re trying to hold it together to be with one another and give support where we can,” she added.
The crossfire also injured another 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, whose identities have not been released publicly. All three students attended different schools, and none of the three were walking together when the shooting began, WPIX reported.
According to WABC-TV, Yambo was struck in the chest, while the other two victims were each hit in a leg.
“I sent my daughter to get an education, and she died,” Yambo’s mother, Yanely Henriquez, told the TV station.
“We are all devastated. We are numb. We are in disbelief. Now I have to get strong for my two older kids,” she added.
According to police, the shooting stemmed from two people who were shouting and gesturing toward each other from across the street, WABC-TV reported.
