A case of bird flu was confirmed over the weekend at an Ohio egg farm, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture per The Associated Press.

Ohio’s state veterinarian, Dennis Summers, told the AP that the farm has started to euthanize all 3 million or so chickens at the farm.

According to the AP, the bird flu is a highly pathogenic disease. The bird flu has returned to the Midwest sooner than officials expected it to after cases months prior in Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. The AP said that there have been a few cases over the summer in some states in the west as well.

A bird flu outbreak has led to the deaths of 43 million chickens and turkeys across the country this year, according to the AP. It has been a contributing factor to the increasing prices of eggs and meat that could once again surge in the fall going into Thanksgiving time.
