After being transported to a children’s hospital in Little Rock, police said the girl died from her injuries, KFSM-TV reported.
“Based on the statements of witnesses and the opinions of medical professionals, it was determined that the fatal injuries were inflicted on the child by the family dog,” Smith said in a statement, according to KNWA-TV.
The dog was seized by the police department and euthanized by an area veterinary service “in accordance with state law,” Lawson said in his statement.
Authorities identified the family dog as a 3-year-old Siberian husky, the Star reported.
The names of the victim and her family members have not been released. Smith said an investigation is ongoing but he does not expect criminal charges to be filed, according to KFSM.
The Cave Springs Police Department is currently investigating the death, according to the television station.
