ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Within the first six minutes after midnight, the U.S. Geological Survey reported there was a 6.7 magnitude earthquake off Chirikof Island, Alaska Friday.
There have also been two aftershocks, a 3.8 and a 3.9.
The USGS says the quake was centered in the ocean about 35 miles beneath the seabed and about 400 miles southwest of Anchorage.
The quake occurred near a remote Aleutian Islands region that is lightly populated.
KIRO 7 talked to a fisherman from Marysville who's in Alaska. He said he could see the earthquake happening.
“It shook really violently. Then it was like the ground was like waving in and out. It was long waves like going in the ground,” said Glen Cooper.
There was no threat of a tsunami.
There was also a 2.5 magnitude quake near Arlington.
Earlier this month, lots of viewers reported feeling a 3.7 magnitude earthquake near Arlington.
Earlier Friday, had been a report of 5.1 magnitude quake northwest of Redding, Calif. that turned out to be a mistake. The USGS issued an erroneous alert based off an earthquake that struck in Alaska.
