Police: Chef used dinner hour to steal from elderly residents

Anacortes, Wash. — The former chef at Cap Sante Court retirement community is under arrest.
Police say 33-year-old Samantha Marney knew exactly when her elderly customers were eating, so she knew exactly when to break into their apartments.
Five residents say they've had jewelry worth tens of thousands of dollars stolen.

"To have this happen, it was like a punch in the stomach." Said Jack Hamilton, Cap Sante executive director.

Anacortes police showed us a table covered with stolen rings, bracelets and necklaces that have been recovered from North Sound pawn shops.
One victim, a 95-year-old woman, told police she is missing $20,000 of jewelry, most of it from her dead husband.


Her son, who asked us not to use his name, says the theft shook her fragile sense of security.

"It was a little bit discouraging for her. She kind of lost a little bit of respect for humanity, I suppose," said the victim's son.

According to court papers, Marney told police she was addicted to meth and heroin.
Hamilton said she was a trusted employee with a spotless five-year record. Moved up-->But another employee grew suspicious when she started showing up in places where she was not supposed to be.

"She was very ruthless in going about it and selecting victims," said Hamilton.
