Vigil for Puyallup shooting victim

PUYALLUP, Wash. — The Puyallup United Methodist Church is filled with those who felt the need to come Sunday tonight.

So many people were affected by Richard Johnson's sudden death.

Moreover, his wife is a teacher for the Puyallup Playschool that is there, too.

"It's also for the church community as well, though," said Rev. Karen Yokota, associate pastor. "Because a lot of people in our church community know them. They're personal friends or they lived near the activity of when the shooting happened."

Last Tuesday, the peace of a Puyallup neighborhood was shattered when Johnson discovered a man allegedly prowling in his truck.

Puyallup police say 34-year-old Nathen Terault, an ex-convict with a long criminal record, shot Johnson then took them on an 8-minute chase, as he fired at more than a dozen people.

Thirteen homes were hit.

It affected the children in the preschool, too, because for a time, they were in lockdown.

“They all remember Richard," said Yokota. "He would come in and help in the preschool. And so they know who he is."

His wife and daughter were at the vigil. But they asked for privacy.
