WSDOT releases travel tips for Labor Day weekend

The Washington State Department of Transportation is warning drivers to expect heavy traffic across the state on Labor Day weekend.

Longer than normal wait times are also expected at Canadian border crossings and ferry docks for most of the weekend.

To help travelers prepare, WSDOT has released data to show the best time to travel on I-5, I-90, US 2 and I-5 near the U.S. Canadian border.

I-5 Olympia to Tacoma: 

  • On Friday, northbound traffic from Olympia to Tacoma is expected to peak around noon while southbound traffic is expected to peak around 11 a.m.
  • On Saturday, northbound traffic from Olympia to Tacoma is expected to peak around 11 a.m. while southbound traffic is expected to peak around 10 a.m.
  • On Sunday, northbound traffic from Olympia to Tacoma is expected to peak around 2 p.m. while southbound traffic is expected to peak around 11 a.m.
  • On Monday, northbound traffic from Olympia to Tacoma is expected to peak around noon while southbound traffic is expected to peak from 11 a.m. to noon.

US 2 Skykomish to Stevens Pass: 

  • On Friday, eastbound traffic from Skykomish to Stevens pass is expected to peak around 2 p.m.
  • On Saturday, eastbound traffic from Skykomish to Stevens Pass is expected to peak around 11 a.m.
  • On Sunday, eastbound traffic from Skykomish to Stevens Pass is expected to peak around 11:30 a.m.
  • On Monday, westbound traffic from Stevens Pass to Skykomish is expected to peak around 11 a.m.

I-90 North Bend to Cle Elum: 

  • On Friday, eastbound traffic from North Bend to Cle Elum is expected to peak around noon and 4 p.m. while traffic westbound is expected to peak around 2 p.m.
  • On Saturday, eastbound traffic from North Bend to Cle Elum is expected to peak around 11 a.m. while traffic westbound is expected to peak around 11 a.m.
  • On Sunday, eastbound traffic from North Bend to Cle Elum is expected to peak at 11 a.m. while traffic westbound is expected to peak from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • On Monday, eastbound traffic from North Bend to Cle Elum is expected to peak around noon while traffic westbound is expected to peak around 10 a.m.

I-5 near the U.S. Canadian border: 

  • On Friday, traffic from Bellingham to the Canadian border is expected to peak around 4 p.m. while traffic southbound is expected to peak around 3 p.m.
  • On Saturday, traffic from Bellingham to the Canadian border is expected to peak around 3 p.m. while traffic southbound is expected to peak around 11 a.m.
  • On Sunday, traffic from Bellingham to the Canadian border is expected to peak around 4 p.m. while traffic southbound is expected to peak around noon.
  • On Monday, traffic from Bellingham to the Canadian border is expected to peak around 4 p.m. while traffic southbound is expected to peak around 1 p.m.
