Washington 811 reminds you to ‘Call before you dig’

SEATTLE — Summer is coming, and that means time for home improvement and gardening, but that also means locating buried utility lines because it’s the law.

Hitting a buried line while you’re digging may not only disrupt service, but it could be costly to repair or result in serious injury or death.

Washington 811 wants to remind you to call 811 before you dig, and ensure there are no utility lines around before you or contractors begin to dig on your property.

Some examples of projects that could involve digging:

  • Digging any hole deeper than 12 inches
  • Hammering a stake into the ground
  • Moving buried landscape elements, like rocks, trees and shrubs
  • Adding a fence
  • Building a deck

At least two days before you plan to move dirt, simply call 811 before you begin.

Utilities will come out and mark the buried lines from the street to your house for free.

Any damage done to utility lines is the property owner’s financial responsibility.
