Shooting near Wallingford playground leaves 2 dead

SEATTLE — Two people are dead after a shooting in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle.

At 1 a.m. on Tuesday, the Seattle Police Department tweeted that officers were investigating a shooting that had left at least one person injured.

When a KIRO 7 News crew arrived at the crime scene on Meridian Avenue North and North 48th Street, right next to Meridian Playground Park, the bodies of two people could be seen in the street.

Seattle police sources said a male and a female were killed. Their ages are not known.

A vehicle was towed from the scene.

A woman who has security cameras aimed at the street corner told KIRO 7 a car pulled up, someone shot two people in the front of the vehicle, and then ran away.

The circumstances of the shooting are not yet known.

Neighbor Elizabeth Yaroschuk said she was awakened by the sound of gunfire at around 12:30 a.m.

“There were five or six shots. It was like “pop” times five,” she said.

Another neighbor said the person who shot the victims was riding in the backseat of their car when it pulled up to a stop at the corner.

“This morning I came out and saw that there was a body in the street, but last night around 12:30 a.m. we heard shots,” said Yaroschuk.

For neighbor Neil Hoover, recent shootings and Tuesday’s double homicide are a major concern.

“I raised my oldest daughter over here and I wouldn’t have her come over here now,” he said.

Tuesday’s shootings came a day after a man was shot and killed at an Delridge encampment.

Yaroschuk said people have noticed changes in the neighborhood that have sparked concerns about crime, so they have been forced to change to deal with it.

“I have a dog that is a very good watchdog, so she’ll bark if there’s any activity,” said Yaroschuk.
