Thieves make off with hundreds of pieces of mail after dumping stolen mail truck

A mail truck stolen from a West Seattle street Monday was found shortly after, but thieves got away with several hundred pieces of mail.

The truck was stolen near the Seaview Methodist Church.

The Seattle division headquarters of the US Postal Inspection Service released surveillance video of the theft, which shows someone getting out of a silver car, which then drives away. The person who got out of the car is then seen looking inside the mail truck before getting in and driving away.

Postal Inspection officials said the thief used an unknown device to get into the truck and start it.

The truck was found dumped a few blocks away. Postal officials believe about 200 pieces of undelivered and collected mail were stolen by the suspects.

Authorities said the people who dumped the mail truck a few blocks away from where it was stolen were seen by a neighbor in the 6500 block of 49th Avenue Southwest, who said the suspects got into a silver two-door Audi with a partial license plate number that starts with ADT.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Postal Inspection Service tip line at 206-748-5430.
