Man shot and killed in Kirkland officer-involved shooting

KIRKLAND, Wash. — One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Kirkland.

The confrontation happened at an apartment complex near Interstate 405 and Northeast 124th Street about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"I heard one, two, three, four, five repeated shots,” said Matthew O’Donnell, who lives in the complex.

It all happened in a parking lot in the complex.

"It was just ch ch ch ch and then a final gunshot," said Mike DeVine, who also heard the gunshots.
"I could smell the gunpowder," O'Donnell said.

O’Donnell says he also heard a woman’s voice and called 911.

“There was a lot of screaming going on,” O’Donnell said. “Before and after (the gunshots), the woman was screaming.”

Kirkland police say in the 911 calls, there were reports of screaming and possibly shots fired.

Four officers got to the apartment complex to find a man in the parking lot with a gun.

“They contacted the male and the male had an assault rifle. They had given instructions for him to put the weapon down,” said Lt. Rob Saloum of Kirkland police.

Kirkland police say the King County major crimes unit is investigating exactly what happened next, but it led to one officer opening fire and hitting the gunman.

They attempted first aid, but by the time an ambulance got here, the man had died.

“We’re just glad nobody else was injured. The officers were fine, the people in the parking lot were fine, and unfortunately it had to end this way,” Saloum said.
