Seattle council approves renaming street in honor of slain community leader D’Vonne Pickett Jr.

SEATTLE — A block in Seattle’s Central District will now be named after a community leader who was shot and killed last year.

Last week, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved a resolution to designate a stretch of East Union Street, between 21st and 22nd Avenues, as D’Vonne Pickett Jr. Way.

“D’Vonne Pickett Jr. was a pillar and beloved member of our community. He was a leader in the Central District and Seattle at large,” said Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda during a meeting on Feb. 14. “His contributions to the Central District and the Seattle community will continue to live on for generations to come, and this is just one way we will make sure that remains in our city.”

The Seattle University basketball star turned father, football coach and business owner was an inspiration to many. He also worked to find solutions to end gun violence.

Pickett was shot and killed outside The Postman, the business he co-owned with his wife KeAnna Pickett in the Central District, on Oct. 19.

His funeral was held at Climate Pledge Arena the following month.

Mayor Bruce Harrell and Mosqueda held an unveiling ceremony for the renamed street on Wednesday.

“D’Vonne is part of our history. He’s part of our story. He will live on in our hearts and he’s gonna live on in our streets,” Harrell said.

Pickett’s family and many of his close friends were also in attendance at Wednesday’s ceremony.
