Family: Port Angeles teen breaks into house while family sleeps

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — Shawna Nathanson calls her husband her hero after he apprehended a burglar who had broken into the family's home as they and their children slept.

Surveillance video shows the burglar trying to get into the house where they were all sleeping.

Within moments, he pushed his way inside.

"He came through the kids' bedroom window and my oldest son, River, had heard them because they were in the living room," Nathanson said. "And called my husband on the cellphone in our bedroom to tell us there was someone in the house."

"He touched it, my window," her 5-year-old daughter, Rose Ogemahgeshig, said of the burglar.

She and her 10-year-old brother, Rock Ogemahgeshig, were in the room, asleep.

Rock was asked what he heard.

"Them taking off my stuff from the window sill," Rock said.

Asked if the burglar was already inside when he woke up, Rock nodded, yes.

"So then my husband jumped out of bed," Nathanson said. "And grabbed his gun and went to go find him."

By then the burglar had walked through the house, going from room to room. Then he left.

Joshua Nathanson followed him outside with a flashlight and a gun. He soon spotted the thief trying to break into the house next door.

"Once my husband confronted him," Shawna said. "That's when he held him at gunpoint until the police showed up."

The 19-year-old suspect from Port Angeles was brought to the Clallam County jail.

The prosecutor's office said no decision has been made just yet on what charges will be filed. And so he will almost certainly be set free, for now.

No matter, Shawna Nathanson has this to say about her husband.

"He's my hero," she said. "He's my hero, for sure."
