Popular Mount Rainier destinations reopen as wildfires continue to burn

Two popular destinations at Mount Rainier National Park reopened Wednesday morning after being closed because of wildfires.

Sunrise and White River and their facilities reopened at 8 a.m, according to a statement issued by the park. Fire danger still exists in the area and smoke may be heavy at times in the area.

Thirteen fires were ignited by lightning in the area on Aug. 10-11 and are burning in steep, rugged terrain, according to the park's wildland fires report.

Park officials ask visitors to use caution when traveling state Route 410 in the park and to the north because fire equipment and personnel will be on and along the roadway.

Areas that remain closed:

• Route 410 from Cayuse Pass to Chinook Pass. A detour is available via Routes12 and 123.
• Trails on the east side of Route 410 and associated backcountry areas.
• Tipsoo Lake, Chinook Pass, and the Naches Loop Trail.
