The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office is investigating an ATV accident as vehicular assault after two people were seriously injured Sunday afternoon in Silverdale.
A 58-year-old man was driving the ATV with a 19-year-old woman as a passenger. They were driving on private property in a gravel pit area that was formerly a paving business in the 8000 block of Dickey Road Northwest in Silverdale.
The ATV was traveling at a high speed on a gravel road and was unable to complete a left turn. It then went off the road and was airborne for 25 to 30 feet, landed, rolled an additional 50 feet and stopped in a pond.
The driver and passenger were ejected and suffered injuries.
The man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. As of Monday morning, the hospital said he is in critical condition.
According to a press release from the Kitsap Sheriff's Office, it was reported that the driver smelled of alcohol, but police were unable to obtain and test a blood draw due to his emergent injuries.
The woman was transported by Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue to Tacoma General Hospital with serious injuries. As of Monday morning, the hospital said she is in stable condition.
