Mukilteo residents worry about commercial flights at Paine Field

MUKILTEO, Wash. — After three unrelated airplane crashes occurred at Everett's Paine Field this week, nearby residents are voicing their concerns.

Lisa Xu remembers her surprise last May when she inexplicably lost power.

"I thought no storm, no rain," said Xu. "What happened to the power?"

In fact, she was standing just down the street from where it happened.

"And then later on we heard the news of plane crash," she said.

A single engine Cessna fell dramatically from the sky moments after taking off from Paine Field.

On the way down it clipped power lines and landed onto Harbour Pointe Boulevard.

The crash occurred in the middle of Jessica Marsh's afternoon commute.

"I never heard of a plane crashing right after take-off before," she said. "Not quite like that."

This week began with a single engine Cessna crash near Paine Field. The two adults on board walked away with no obvious injuries.  Then Friday, a Cessna got into trouble on take-off, slid down the runway, and plowed into a perimeter fence.  An hour later, another plane made a hard landing, and pilot error was blamed.  No one was hurt in any of the incidents.

Marsh says she doesn't worry about crashes here.

"Not really, no," she said. "I mean, it's not a very common occurrence."

A bigger concern for many people in Mukilteo is the return of commercial flights out of Paine Field. Alaska Airlines is making plans to fly out from Mukilteo for the first time since the 1940s.

"I would say as far as the airport, my bigger concern is the logistics," said Janet Ensign, a Mukilteo resident for 15 years. "The traffic and the noise and things like that."
