Man shot after police pursuit near Port Orchard

A 72-year-old man was shot and injured Tuesday evening after a police chase near Port Orchard, deputies said.

The man left his home on New Dove Lane at about 3 p.m., where there was an ongoing domestic violence situation involving a gun. Deputies said he started making verbal threats to himself and others.

The suspect's family told deputies he was suffering from a mental health crisis and had left the house with a loaded weapon.

The man then drove around South Kitsap.

Deputies located him and tried to stop his SUV by putting out spike strips, but he avoided them.

Reports said during the pursuit, he pointed a gun both at himself and at officers.

The pursuit was terminated due to rush hour traffic.

At about 4:50 p.m., the man came back to his home and deputies got a warrant for his arrest.

When deputies tried to get him to voluntarily surrender, he drove through a neighbor's yard and onto a road.

After he pulled into a small farm in Olalla in the 8500 block of Banner Road Southeast, the man was shot, but it is unknown if he was shot by an officer or whether he shot himself.

He taken to a Tacoma area hospital. His condition and the extent of his injuries are unknown.

No officers were hit.

Kurt Koeneman told KIRO 7 it was about 7 p.m. when he heard what sounded like gunshots from his neighbor's house.

He came out and saw dozens of police cars lined up on his street.

"You never hear anybody shooting on the road it was always out in the woods. This was right on the road," said Koeneman.

KIRO 7 News video from early Wednesday showed the driver's side window on the suspect's SUV was shattered with what appeared to be bullet holes.
