KENT, Wash. — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a train Sunday night.
On Sunday at about 8:30 p.m., Kent police officers were called to the area under the State Route 167 BNSF Railway overpass for a report of a train hitting a pedestrian.
The person who called 911 told dispatchers the pedestrian had been walking on the tracks when he was hit.
Kent police officers and personnel from Puget Sound Fire searched for the victim. A 39-year-old man was found just north of the 228th overpass. His body showed major trauma and he had died from his injuries.
BNSF Railway staff told police that when they saw the man walking on the tracks, they immediately tried to stop the train, but the distance was too short and the train struck the victim.
The train was reported to have been traveling at 47 mph and all of its safety features were working properly. BNSF is conducting its own investigation.
“We would like to remind everyone that walking on train tracks is extremely dangerous. It is very difficult to judge how fast a train is moving and how fast it will reach your location. Trains are unable to stop quickly. Please stay off the tracks,” Kent police said in a Facebook post.
