Longtime Mariners fan breaks ankle from tackle by other fan trying to catch a foul ball

mariners fan hurt

SEATTLE — A long-time Mariners fan, Rachel Ramseur, is recovering after being injured during a game against the Detroit Tigers earlier this month at T-Mobile Park.

Ramseur, a season ticket holder and devoted fan for over 20 years, says she was tackled by another fan while attempting to catch a foul ball, resulting in a broken ankle.

“I just feel kind of disregarded,” said Rachel Ramseur, expressing her disappointment with the Mariners’ lack of response to the incident.

The incident occurred when Rachel saw a foul ball drop near her in a relatively empty standing area. She attempted to retrieve it. But before she could reach the ball, she says a man tackled her, then pulled her right leg back forcefully in attempt to get the ball himself.

She says his intentional, forceful action broke her ankle on both sides. Ramseur’s wife, Sasha Summer Cousineau, was alerted to the injury via an SOS message from Ramseur’s Apple Watch.

Rachel was taken to Harborview Medical Center and underwent immediate surgery.

The Mariners’ liability release states that ticket holders “assume risk of injury” including those caused by other “spectators’ misconduct.”

Ramseur has filed an assault report with the Seattle Police, who have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

Now Ramseur cannot work due to her injury and has mounting medical bills. But, she is most hurt by the lack of response from the Mariners saying “I feel like I’ve invested a lot into the team. And then to get this silence is just hurtful.”

She is hoping to obtain surveillance video and possibly learn more about the internal investigation that may identify the man she says is responsible for her injury.

The Mariners sent KIRO 7 a response after the story originally aired, saying:

“We are aware of the incident and have been in contact with both the guest and local agencies in response to the situation over the past two weeks.

Following the guest’s injury, they were assisted immediately by T-Mobile Park staff and on-site medical professionals before being transported to a local hospital....The safety of our fans is always our top priority at T-Mobile Park and we are hopeful they will have a swift and full recovery.”
