Local esthetician shares tips to improve your skincare routine

You may be surprised to learn that the best way to keep your skin healthy is by keeping your skincare routine simple. We met with Master Esthetician Erika Cooper Deaton.

Deaton is an instructor at the Euro Institute of Skin Care in Renton and the owner of Juno Esthetics in Bellevue. With years of experience and teaching, as well as an emphasis in holistic skincare, Erika took time to break down some important products and ingredients you should incorporate into your everyday routine:

  1. SPF: This is the most important skincare regime item and every single person, every single condition and skin challenge can be helped with the use of SPF. It is a crucial item for anyone who wants to work on the signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. It acts as a shield from UV damage and pollution. You want sunscreen to work alone and not be in an additional item like make up or moisturizers if possible.
  2. Hyaluronic acid: A great ingredient that is helpful to most, if not all, skin types or conditions. It is a humectant (a substance that absorbs or helps another substance retain moisture). It can appear in serums and moisturizers and help hydrate epidermally dehydrated skin. Inside and out, hyaluronic acid helps our skin appear plump and moisturized. Not ideal in very dry environments.
  3. Antioxidants: These help to protect the skin from free radical damage and skin stress from things like UV damage and pollution. Great to use during the day to help with free radical damage and exposure. They can help stimulate the production of collagen and elastin as well as improve hydration. They can be synthetic or natural substances. Vitamin C is the most common because it is the most abundant in human skin. However, there are many antioxidants that can be used. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using them, but to use them with caution depending on other things in the delivery system that could potentially cause irritation or affect skin type/condition (for example, a Vitamin C oil would not be good for an overly oily skin type, so they might want to use a lightweight Vitamin C serum).
