TUKWILA, Wash. — Northbound SR 599 was blocked at SR 99 in Tukwila after a hit-and-run crash involving 12 vehicles.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said the chain-reaction crash happened shortly after 5 a.m.
Police said it was caused by the driver of a black sedan who hit a semitruck then slammed into a guardrail.
“Things happened really fast in front of them and there’s nothing they could do. I mean, you’re not expecting the vehicle in front of you to strike a semi and go out of control,” said said Trooper Rick Johnson.
One person was taken to the hospital.
The State Patrol said all drivers involved gave statements, which included claims that a woman behind the wheel of the black car that caused the crash fled the scene by getting a ride from another driver.
“There’s individuals at the scene that saw her walk away and get picked up,” said Johnson.
Police are now hoping to identify the woman.
The highway reopened around 8:15 a.m.
And here’s a birds eye view. This gives you a better look at the damage to that black sedan. WSP tells me the driver of that car fled after the crash and was picked up by another driver. Shreds of that car are scattered all over SR 599 in #Tukwilla. @KIRO7Seattle pic.twitter.com/hTwBSAFWBI
