Firefighters share experiences with pregnancy while working in fire service

KING COUNTY, Wash. — Firefighters in King County are sharing their experiences with pregnancy while working in the fire service.

Five women in the service spoke at an event hosted by the King County Fire Chiefs Association to address how they overcame obstacles while working.

Three of the women are currently pregnant, one had her baby a year ago and one had her child months before entering the fire academy 25 years ago.

They are encouraging other women to apply for upcoming openings.

Women in the fire service are underrepresented and face many barriers, including pregnancy and parenting.

A Bellevue firefighter also introduced a non-profit organization aimed at financially helping female firefighters who are experiencing infertility.
