KING COUNTY, Wash. — Crews are still putting out hot spots hours after a massive fire broke out at a Skyway apartment complex, forcing dozens of people out of their homes two days before Christmas.
When firefighters arrived at the Greentree Apartments on South 123rd Street around 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday, flames were shooting from the roof and windows of the upper floor.
Firefighters evacuated everyone from the three-story, 24-unit building.
The fire was so intense that crews had to leave the building for fear the roof would collapse. Firefighters continued to fight the flames from the outside, and the roof of the building did give way.
One woman said she had to jump from a window to escape because the smoke and flames were too fierce for her to walk out of the building.
One man was taken to the hospital.
People who live in the building are getting warm inside a Metro bus.
About 60 firefighters from King County Fire District 20, Burien, Tukwila and Renton fought the flames.
The King County Fire District has set up a fund to help the families affected. Click here for more information.
