BURIEN, Wash. — A special meeting called by Burien City Council to address the removal of a homeless encampment near city hall ended with no action being taken.
The encampment is located at 152nd and 6th Avenue Southwest. People in the area have been putting pressure on city leaders to have it removed but a letter from King County stating that the sheriff’s office would not help with the removal has left leaders scrambling for what to do.
Tuesday night’s meeting was packed full of people weighing in on the situation. Many shared frustrations about the encampment, demanding that it be removed. However, despite there being several solutions proposed, none of those options were passed.
“Don’t continue to do nothing, our city begs of you,” Councilmember Cydney Moore said during the meeting.
KIRO 7 spoke to some people who live in the encampment who said they know people want them out.
“I feel like crap, it’s wrong I mean to make people move from one site to another site,” Michael, who lives in the encampment, said.
The city has given people camping on the lot notice that they will be removed come Wednesday night, but many said they’d just find another place to camp.
“There isn’t anybody here who can say they have a constant job, there might be some people who do day labor, or own a vehicle or contribute to the community in some way however it’s minimal most people are here wrapped around a substance abuse issue,” Stephen Young, who also lives in the encampment said.
