Bear spotted on Maple Valley sidewalk

MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. — Sheriff's deputies on patrol in Maple Valley spotted a bear early Tuesday morning.

The bear was wandering down a sidewalk near Lake Wilderness Elementary School and State Route 169 at about 3 a.m.

A representative of the Department of Fish and Wildlife said agents weren't planning to respond.

Bear sightings are common about this time of year, as the animals begin to move around after their winter's hibernation.

With development pushing out into areas that were previously wilderness, encounters with people are more frequent.

The common concerns are when bears get used to humans, so they're not intimidated. And they can be a nuisance if they find a food source.
