LONGVIEW, Wash. — The Lewis and Clark Bridge (SR 433) was closed Monday morning because of backpacks that were tied to the bridge, Washington State Patrol said.
The backpacks were reported to be hanging around 15 feet below the deck of the bridge over the Columbia River between Longview, Washington, and Rainier, Oregon, before 11 a.m., the State Patrol said.
Law enforcement officials said they don’t have any idea what’s inside the backpacks.
Oregon State Police requested the help of the Washington State Patrol because the backpacks are on the Oregon side of the bridge, the Washington State Patrol said.
Bomb technicians with the Oregon State Patrol, along with the U.S. Coast Guard were also called to the scene.
Law enforcement officials said there is no estimate for when the bridge and waterway will reopen.
