Active landslide keeps Clallam County highway closed

CLALLAM COUNTY, Wash. — A landslide is still covering a Clallam County highway and it could be some time before it reopens.

The initial slide that happened during the heavy rain and flooding last month was 275 feet wide and covered 325 feet of state Route 112 near Clallam Bay.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said the Nov. 15 storm closed every state highway in the county.

As the slide continues to move, even more debris fell onto SR 112 Sunday, extending the slide another 200 feet.

WSDOT said that because the slide is still active, it’s unsafe for crews to clear debris or make the necessary extensive repairs.

A temporary bypass route has been established for local traffic, including school buses and commercial vehicles. The private two-lane road that alternates one-way in one section will be maintained and repaired until SR 112 is reopened.
