'Summer to End Hunger' campaign helps feed hungry kids during summer months

During the month of June, KIRO 7 is working with community partners to help end hunger for hundreds of thousands of kids in Western Washington.

Every year, more than 250,000 kids in Western Washington receive free or reduced meals at school. But during the summer, some families struggle to replace those meals.

To help bridge the gap, KIRO 7 Cares, QFC and Food Lifeline are teaming up in the Summer to End Hunger campaign.

QFC customers in Western Washington can help support more than 300 food banks by finding the Summer to End Hunger display at their local store and grabbing a blue or yellow lunch box to be scanned at checkout.

Each box is a $5 or $10 donation that will go a long way to stock up local food banks.

For every dollar donated, Food Lifeline will be able to provide the equivalent of four meals, or about 12 pounds of food.  A $10 donation equals about 40 meals.

“In every one of our stores, we have a Food Lifeline grocery partner with them, so that money stays directly in their neighborhood with their customers, associates, family and friends right here in the community,” said QFC spokesman Zach Stratton.
