SEATTLE — The University of Washington is expanding alcohol sales at Husky Stadium and in the process, providing fans a way into football games for half the price of the cheapest seat.
This football season, UW is unveiling the Off-Leash Deck, a 500-person capacity closed-in deck in the Northwest corner of the stadium where fans can buy beer and wine.
“Why not?” said 40-year season ticket holder Colin Nisbet who said he won’t likely use it. “No, I like football. I can drink beer before and after.”
Fans must add the Off-Leash Deck to their ticket before the game for $25. But you don’t have to have a game ticket. You can buy into the Off-Leash Deck by paying $25 as a standing room only ticket. Then you wouldn’t have access to any other part of the stadium.
Husky Stadium employees told KIRO 7s John Knicely there will be limited view of the on-field action from the deck. So it will be first come, first serve for those who can grab a spot on the railing overlooking the field.
The stands will remain alcohol free, but other schools like West Virginia University have alcohol sales stadium-wide. A WVU spokesman told KIRO 7 since they allowed alcohol sales stadium-wide in 2011, it’s actually cut down on alcohol-related problems. And it’s been a source of revenue. West Virginia University made $632,694 in 2012 and $526,826 in 2013 on alcohol sales.
A UW spokesman told KIRO 7 that currently, they have no intentions of opening alcohol sales stadium-wide.
