Former Seattle SuperSonic Robert Swift goes back to jail

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

SEATTLE — Former Seattle SuperSonic center Robert Swift was sent back to jail Monday.  KIRO 7 was first to report Thursday that Swift was arrested in Snohomish County last week for an attempted home invasion, but Monday he faced unrelated weapons charges.

The 7 feet 1 inch tall former NBA star wore a different uniform -- an orange jail jumpsuit.  An admitted heroin addict, Swift pleaded not guilty to having an illegal sawed-off shotgun at his Kirkland home last year.  Police found it during a raid when they also uncovered a cache of weapons belonging to Swift's roommate.

Swift was never sent to jail, and then and just last week, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office says he attempted a home invasion in Gold Bar.  Police say Swift, along with another man, was caught with 10 knives, a rifle and a lock-picking kit.

"It appeared they were either trying to make entry or knock on the door,” Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Shari Ireton told us Thursday.

Monday his attorney argued he's not a danger and should be released from jail.

"He has no history of violent offenses, not even misdemeanors.  No prior offenses involving weapons,” Swift’s attorney said.

Swift's fall from grace has been extraordinary -- from a first round draft pick by the Sonics in 2004, to now--  admitting to the judge he has nowhere to live.

"My concern is really the combination with the drug issues and access to the weapons, that's my concern with regard to your likelihood to commit a serious offense,” the judge told Swift before denying his request for release on his own recognizance.

Swift's bail remains set at $20,000.  His case is set for Jan. 26.  The judge said once he finds housing, likely with family in Issaquah, he'll reconsider releasing him, but with county supervision.

KIRO 7 checked --  no charges have been filed at this point for that attempted home invasion in Gold Bar.
