Firefighters battle two-alarm blaze at recycling center

SEATTLE — Flames shot through the roof of a recycling complex in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood in a blaze that kept crews busy throughout the night.

About 11 p.m. Tuesday, employees discovered a fire and called firefighters to the Rabanco Recycling Center at 2733 Third Ave. S.

Crews arrived to find flames shooting through the roof and quickly upgraded the response to two alarms.

About 90 firefighters worked for hours to knock down the intense flames at the processing and sorting center.

Firefighters believe the fire started in a pile of material and spread to surrounding piles.  The fire was ruled to be accidental.

Significant damage was done to the roof of the building, but crews said the building was not a risk to collapse.

As of 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, flames were no longer visible from the exterior, but there was still an active fire in the building.

The Seattle Fire Department remained at the scene throughout the night, digging through piles of material and looking for hot spots.

The fire was extinguished nearly eight hours later.  Firefighters had left the scene by 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Republic Services, the company who runs the facility, said it appared that there was no major damage to equipment.

Estimated damage to the building is $10,000.
