Fire at Renton home work of arsonist, occupant says

RENTON, Wash. — After a Renton family barely escaped their burning home, one family member said she believes the fire was intentionally set by someone who is obsessed with her granddaughter.

Firefighters arrived at the house on Jefferson Avenue Northeast near Eighth Place shortly before 7 a.m. Monday.

Fire crews rescued one man who was still inside.  He was treated at the scene.

Everyone else in the family managed to get out, along with four dogs, a cat and a parrot, but several other animals did not survive.

Nickie Williamson, who lives in the house, said she believes the house was targeted because a gas can was left on the lawn and fires were set at every exit from the house.

“I know they (set the fire).  That gas can was left right there.  See the gas can?” Williamson showed a KIRO 7 News crew.

When asked why someone would set the house on fire, Williamson said someone was obsessed with her granddaughter.

Firefighters are still investigating and have not said if the fire was suspicious.

Crews said the flames caused significant damage to the attic and one side of the house, and that with no working smoke detectors, the family was lucky to escape.

No one was seriously injured.
