DARRINGTON, Wa. — Darrington Mayor Dan Rankin is headed to the White House to receive a leadership award for his response to last year's devastating Oso landslide.

The Daily Herald newspaper reports (http://is.gd/zLN0WI ) that Rankin is being honored May 8 by the federal Small Business Administration with a Phoenix Award for "selflessness, ingenuity and tenacity in the aftermath of disaster." Officials note that he became an anchor for the community in the wake of the March 2014 slide, which wiped out a neighborhood and killed 43 people.

Rankin called it a flattering, humbling surprise. He said it's a reflection not just of his actions, but the entire community's response to the tragedy.
