Victim in Marysville fatal hit-and-run identified

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — The victim of a fatal hit-and-run has been identified as an 18-year-old Marysville boy.

Marysville police responded to a hit-and-run crash in the 10200 block of Shoultes Road at 11:27 p.m. on Saturday and found one person dead, identified as Shane J. Santos,  at the scene.   Two other men suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police said two men had been walking on the shoulder of the road and a third man had been riding a bicycling alongside them.

Witnesses told officers they saw a car stop about a 100 feet from the site of the collision and a passenger get out of the car who yelled, “Oh sh*t! Oh sh*t!” when he saw the bodies in the road and on the shoulder.

The witnesses said the driver yelled, “Dude! Dude!” to the passenger, who then jumped back in the car before it sped off, leaving skid marks.

According to a probable cause document, police followed a trail of fluid to find the vehicle that hit the victims.

Police said an officer found an unoccupied vehicle parked in the 5000 block of 122nd Street that was similar to a description of the vehicle involved in the crash.

The car had extensive front end damage, was missing its front bumper and license plate, and had a shattered windshield.

Documents said that while the officer was inspecting the car, a man, identified as 27-year-old Terrence Oleson, walked up and said he was the driver.   “I f*cked up! I f*cked up!” he told the officer, police documents said.

The officer said he could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Oleson.

Police asked the man where the passenger was and the driver claimed he was the only one in the car.

A K-9 was brought in and the 30-year-old passenger of the car was found hiding at a nearby home.  He, too, smelled of alcohol, police said.

Both men were identified by witnesses, police documents said, and the men were taken into custody.

Oleson, who has a prior DUI conviction,  faces charges of vehicular homicide, two counts of vehicular assault and felony hit-and-run.  He is being held in the Snohomish County Jail on $100,000 bail.

The passenger, who was arrested for investigation of rendering criminal assistance, was later released for lack of probable cause.

Of the two survivors, one victim suffered a broken leg and severe head injuries.  The other victim suffered a fractured pelvis and spinal fractures.
