Crews make emergency expansion joint repair on I-5

SEATTLE — Crews wrapped up emergency repairs on northbound I-5 in downtown Seattle after an expansion joint popped up early Tuesday.

The issue was discovered at about 2 a.m. near Seneca Street.

All the mainline lanes were shut down during the repair, which was wrapped up by 4:30 a.m. The freeway has since reopened.

A maintenance crew discovered the issue during a routine inspection overnight.

Crews lifted the steel plate, cut it, smoothed it and welded it back in place to complete the repair before the morning commute.

Expansion joints hold the concrete slabs together and allow them to expand and contract.
