Backpack led to arrest in stabbing death of man in shopping cart

Police said a man accused of killing another man and leaving his body in a shopping cart in Seattle’s Othello neighborhood left behind a backpack that led officers to the suspect.

SEATTLE — Police arrested 46-year-old Michael Sean Thompson Friday in connection with the victim’s death.

The King County Medical Examiner said the victim had been stabbed multiple times.

On Thursday, police received reports of a man seen pushing a shopping cart that contained what appeared a pile of clothes with feet sticking out. Witnesses told police they saw the man leave the cart and walk away. When officers arrived, they found a body in the cart.

Police also found a backpack that contained documents from Sound Mental Health, which is a few blocks away from where the body was found.

Detectives contacted staff and learned a resident had not been seen at the facility for several days.

After a technician recovered a fingerprint from the shopping cart, it matched that of Thompson.

Investigators said Thompson also matched the description given by a witness of the man she saw pushing the shopping cart.

Detectives arrested Thompson at his wife’s home in South Seattle.

According to a Seattle police report, Thompson admitted to knowing the victim and said he had seen him in the last few days.

Police said Thompson has a history of drug use.
