100-year-old train trestle to be replaced in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — Sound Transit is unveiling plans to replace a 100-year-old wooden train trestle in Tacoma.

They say the new structure will ease congestion for Sounder and Amtrak passengers.

The new trestle would have two tracks.

Sound Transit will be addressing the specifics on Tuesday afternoon, but for more than a century, the wooden trestle has handled train traffic.

But with the new structure, Sound Transit says more track can be utilized. The plan to replace the wooden trestle near the Tacoma Dome comes as part of a ballot measure that voters approved seven years ago.

Sound Transit says a newer concrete and steel structure will keep up with growing demand on the Sounder route that serves Seattle and Lakewood.

The point of Tuesday afternoon's meeting at the Tacoma Dome station is to allow people to comment and give input on proposed designs.

With how old the trestle is, there are elements of history that will be saved.

Sound Transit says construction starts next year and should wrap up in 2018 with no interruption in traffic.
