Hit-and-run crash shuts down northbound I-5 in Shoreline

SHORELINE, Wash. — Troopers are investigating a hit-and-run crash in Shoreline early Tuesday that caused the closure of northbound I-5. All lanes have since reopened.

Trooper Rick Johnson said the first call about the crash was received at 2:36 a.m. on northbound I-5 just north of NE 145th Street.  As of 7 a.m., the HOV lane was open.  All lanes reopened shortly after.

Johnson said the hit-and-run driver rear-ended a Camaro and continued heading north where he collided with a semi truck. At that point, the driver got out and ran away but was taken into custody shortly after.  Troopers say he was impaired.

Meanwhile, another car, a Scion, also struck the Camaro. When the driver of the Camaro got out of the car to check the damage, they were struck at a low speed by the Scion. That person is expected to be OK.

Traffic was being directed off I-5 at the Metro bus base. Traffic was backed up 10 miles.

KIRO 7 Reporter Rob Munoz saw people turning around and going the wrong direction on the shoulder to get off the freeway.
