Woman injured in Central District shooting; 1 arrested

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle police swarmed Flo Ware Park in the Central District for about five hours Friday, collecting dozens of shell casings.

They were there following a shooting that sent a 29-year-old woman to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

According to witnesses, there was a group in the park, near 28th and Jackson, enjoying a barbecue.  Police said a man or several people walked up and opened fire on them.  The group in the park may have returned fire.  Four nearby houses, a church and playground equipment were struck by bullets.

"Everybody was having a good time and the second I turned the corner up on 29th I just heard shots," said Jayson Seraile, who heard the shots from about a block away. "It was just a pop, pop, pop, not a big caliber-sounding gun."

Police arrested a man with two handguns downtown, who they believe fled the shooting on a bus.  The weapons appeared to match the caliber of the dozens of shell casings recovered in thepark. Officers are still looking for more witnesses and suspects.

"This could have been a lot worse than it was, even though it's still a tragic event," a police spokesman who showed up to the scene near 28th and Jackson said.
