Woman sentenced for raping unconscious victim at home of sheriff’s deputy

LIVINGSTON, La. — A Louisiana woman found guilty of sexual assault and video voyeurism was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Melanie Curtin received the harsh sentence despite her defense attorney’s attempts to challenge the jury’s guilty verdict, WAFB reported.

Curtin was convicted of helping a former Livingston sheriff’s deputy, Dennis Perkins, rape and film an unconscious woman at his home in 2014, The Advocate reported. The video was discovered in 2019 when the Louisiana Attorney General’s office was investigating Perkins.

Curtin was allegedly in a relationship with Perkins when the 17-minute video was recorded in 2014, WBRZ reported. The victim in the video testified during Curtin’s trial, saying she had no memory of what had happened.

“When I learned about (the video), I didn’t … I can’t even wrap my brain around it. I didn’t think it was possible. When I saw parts of that video, I wanted to literally die,” the victim testified in court, according to The Advocate.

Perkins and his wife, Cynthia, are separately facing a list of charges for other crimes, WBRZ reported.

Curtin apologized in court Tuesday for her actions, but said she has no memory of what happened, WBRZ reported.
