PORTER RANCH, Calif. — Shoppers were a little startled early Saturday to find a bear browsing the aisles of a Ralphs supermarket in Porter Ranch, California.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the bear was spotted inside the store at around 6:30 a.m., following a string of about three bear-sighting calls, KNBC reported.
“I thought the video was amazing,” David Balen, of the Porter Ranch neighborhood council, told KCAL.
“I’m glad that nobody came in contact with the bear. Anything can happen,” Balen added.
Officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were able to contain the roughly 120-pound adult bear inside a construction area behind a nearby Walmart, where the animal hid under a trailer, the TV station reported.
“It was decided that the best route for not only public safety but also for the bear itself was to chemically immobilize the animal, which we were successful in doing,” Lt. Jake Coombs, an officer with the Department of Fish and Wildlife, told KCAL, noting that the bear is “on its way back to the Angeles National Forest for release to a suitable habitat.”
No injuries were reported, KNBC reported.
