KRUM, Texas — Quick actions by a Texas high school teacher helped prevent a student from choking on Thursday.
Carly Lovelace, who teaches English at Krum High School, was conducting class Thursday when one of her students jumped from her chair, panicking, KXAS-TV reported.
Lovelace realized immediately that the student was choking and followed the student, who had run into the school’s hallway, according to a video posted on Facebook by the Krum Independent School District.
The student was choking on the lid of a plastic water bottle, but Lovelace immediately wrapped her arms around the student and began performing the Heimlich maneuver, KXAS reported.
After several attempts, Lovelace was able to dislodge the lid and hugged the student.
“Mrs. Lovelace’s instant action is truly heroic,” Krum ISD Superintendent Jason Cochran said in a statement. “In a time when educators and education is constantly under fire, it is truly inspiring to watch a teacher create such a life-changing moment and have such a connection with her student.
“Seeing this student embrace Mrs. Lovelace for so long after being saved is inspiring to me and inspiring to others in the profession; that relationship right there is why teachers come into this profession.”
The student received medical attention from the school nurse and was cleared to return to class.
