CECIL COUNTY, Md. — A school bus driver was charged with driving under the influence after a crash sent a the bus into a ditch.
Deputies with the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office told the Cecil Daily that the driver was a contractor working for Cecil County Public Schools who lost control of the bus and ran off the road, hit a guardrail and crashed into a ditch on Thursday.
No students were on the bus at the time of the crash.
Deputies who responded to the scene said they smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and conducted field sobriety tests, WBAL reported.
The driver, identified as Susan Small, was driving to Charlestown Elementary School to pick up children at afternoon dismissal and take them home, a spokesperson for the school district told the Cecil Daily. The spokesperson said Small drove some students home from North East High School earlier that afternoon.
Small was charged with DUI, reckless driving and negligent driving charges, according to WBAL.
In a statement to the Cecil Daily, the school district said, “While this particular driver is the employee of a bus contractor and not the direct employee of CCPS, this driver will no longer be driving for CCPS.”
