Spring River Zoo on Facebook posted on Thursday that the night before, Dec. 28, four of its animals were killed. Spring River Zoo decided to close down on Thursday and reopened Friday at 10 a.m.

“Three loose dogs dug under new fencing and broke into the zoo, killing three aoudads (barbary sheep) and one wallaby,” said Spring River Zoo.

Spring River Zoo said that the USDA, zoo veterinarians, and other agencies who are required to be informed, have been notified.

Roswell’s public affair director, Juanita Jennings, reportedly told the Roswell Daily Record that the rest of the animals were undergoing welfare checks following the attack to make sure they were not “traumatized”, according to The Associated Press. Jennings also reportedly said that the fencing was recently put in.

Spring River Zoo said on Friday that animal services are actively looking for the dogs and if you see the dogs, contact animal services at 575-624-6722.
