STANLEY, N.C. — Former Wendy’s employee Dennis Peek finally got to have his retirement party on Saturday after he was fired without notice last month, according to his family.
The retirement party for Peek, who has Down syndrome, was held on Saturday afternoon in Stanley, North Carolina, according to WSOC-TV.

Mayor Steve Denton told WSOC last month they were putting together the special celebration after learning that Peek had been fired after working nearly 22 years at the fast food restaurant.
Peek had already been planning to retire when he was let go in October because “he wasn’t able to do his job like a normal person,” his family told WSOC.
His family advocated for him after learning he was fired without receiving a notice.
His sister, Cona Turner, told WSOC that she didn’t know what to do after finding out that her younger brother was fired from his job.
“I asked why and I was told he could not perform his duties,” she said.
It was a discovery that she didn’t want her brother to face.
“He don’t understand, and we can’t tell him he was terminated. We have not told him, and we won’t tell him,” Turner said in October.
After Turner posted her frustrations to Facebook, she received a call in October from Carolina Restaurant Group, which owns and operates the Wendy’s, said Peek could be reinstated, according to WSOC.
Peek’s family eventually decided to do the one thing that he was looking forward to the most: a retirement party.
“I feel in my heart at this point, I should do what is best for my brother,” Turner said in a Facebook post.
Peek is described as a fun-loving guy who always has a smile on his face, according to WSOC.
