“The storm blew this way, and we were pinned under this refrigerator,” Will Latham told WFIE-TV.

Latham, his wife and daughter were alerted to the storm by his mother, the television station reported.

“We had kinda gone to bed. At that time, my mother actually called and actually forced us to move to the basement,” Latham told WFIE. “No sooner had we got backed into a corner, the tornado hit, and blew us into the back of the basement.”

The Lathams’ home was destroyed in a matter of seconds. But they were protected, thanks to the refrigerator.

“One of our refrigerators that we had for extra storage blew over with us and covered myself and my daughter,” Latham told WFIE. “Luckily, if it hadn’t been for that fridge, we wouldn’t have made it.”

Shannon Latham said she was slammed into the back wall of the basement, but said she was able to free herself enough to get help.

“So I just kept holding my flashlight in the air,” Shannon Latham told WFIE. “So someone could see my light, and I kept screaming for help. And finally, I could hear someone off in the distance, ‘We’re coming. We’re coming.’”

Help did indeed arrive. The couple is thankful they are alive, and now are grappling with how to recover from the storms.

“We’ll be fine,” Will Latham told WFIE. “I’m not sure we’ll build back here yet, but we’ll be fine.”
