Minnesota Department of Corrections spokesman Andy Skoogman on Friday said that he expected former officer Kim Potter to be released from the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Shakopee after serving about 16 months, according to The Associated Press.

Judge Regina Chu sentenced Kim Potter to a total of 24 months, with 16 months served in prison and the remainder to be served on supervised release. She will also be credited for the time she has already served — 58 days.

Potter, 50, was convicted of manslaughter in the death of Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, according to NBC News.

Potter was a member of the Brooklyn Center Police Department for 26 years, NBC News reported. Potter drew her handgun instead of a Taser which led to Wright’s death. Potter has been in jail since Dec. 23, 2021.

“Our criminal investigative analysts are working closely with law enforcement to monitor the situation to ensure Kim Potter, like all incarcerated persons, is safe as she leaves our facility,” Skoogman said in a statement obtained by the AP.

The shooting happened as Derek Chauvin was on trial for the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. According to the AP, Wright’s death led to protests for multiple days.
