DeLorean returns ‘Back to the Future’ with electric Alpha5

The car made famous by the 1985 movie “Back to the Future,” is returning in a new way.

In 1985, “Back to the Future” featured a DMC DeLorean that was transformed into a time machine. Now the car manufacturer is looking to bring the brand into the future with an electric design.

On its website, DeLorean is offering a first look at the Alpha5, which features a range of 300+ miles on a single charge and top speeds of 155 mph.

“The Alpha5 is a representation of the past 40 years of DeLorean,” Troy Beetz, the company’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “There was this enormous responsibility to make sure we honored the history of the DeLorean brand, but an even greater responsibility in curating its future…I think we did both with the Alpha5.”

The new car was first mentioned in February, and is set to be revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a prestigious California car show, in August, NPR reported.

The new car keeps the iconic gullwing doors of the original, and while there are only two doors, Car and Driver magazine said the openings seem wide enough to make it simple to get into the backseat.

DeLorean has had new owners since its inception. The DeLorean Motor Company produced only 9,000 cars before going bankrupt in 1982, three years before “Back to the Future” was in theaters, NPR reported.

Stephen Wynne, previously the company’s CEO, bought the rights to the company several years ago and moved it to Humble, Texas, The Detroit News reported. The company had initially opened to make replicas of the original but frustrated by government regulations, changed course, the newspaper reported.

The current CEO of DeLorean, Joost de Vries, told NPR that the company is planning to build the new cars in a yet-to-be-built facility in San Antonio, Texas, which would create 450 new jobs, NPR reported.

The car is expected to go on sale in 2024, Fox News reported.
